With the revision of Japan's sake tax law, the price of easy open end beer will decrease from October 2026, but the price of sparkling wine will increase by about 10 yen. At present, supermarkets in Tokyo are crowded with customers rushing to buy sparkling wine and other similar drinks.
On September 16th, major supermarkets in Tokyo were filled with cardboard boxes filled with sparkling wine, third class beer, and pre mixed cocktails. These alcoholic beverages will face a tax increase starting next month.

According to AEON Retail, the sales of alcoholic beverages affected by tax increases at the beginning of this month are about 1.5 times higher than the same period last year. If this trend continues, sales will double by the end of the month. From the sales trend, we expect demand to be quite strong. Previously, alcohol taxes varied based on malt content. Starting from next month, the tax rate will be unified at 54.25 yen per 350 milliliters. After the tax rate is unified, the tax on beer will be reduced by about 9 yen. On the other hand, the tax on sparkling wine and third category beer will increase by about 7 yen. The tax on pre mixed cocktails will also increase from 28 yen to 35 yen, an increase of 7 yen.
Major supermarkets in Yokohama have received notifications from wholesalers regarding price adjustments. A supermarket said, "The notice is issued in the form of printed documents, listing which products' prices will rise or fall at when. Regarding beer, the notice states that the purchase price will decrease by about 5%, but for second category beer such as sparkling beer and third category beer, the notice states that the price will increase by about 6%
According to the supermarket, the retail price of beer will decrease from 252 yen to about 240 yen, while the retail price of sparkling wine and third class beer will increase from 208 yen to about 220 yen. The price difference of about 40 yen previously will now narrow down to 20 yen.
