On October 13th, it was reported that the Indian beer industry is facing a shortage of aluminum cans with easy to pull lids. The industry has requested the government to relax regulations so that breweries can obtain supply from abroad.
The Brewers Association of India (BAI), representing AB InBev, Carlsberg, and United Breweries, stated that the industry is expected to face an annual shortage of 120 to 130 million cans of 500ml cans, accounting for approximately 20% of India's total beer sales.
In India, suppliers of aluminum cans such as Indian Ball Beverage Packaging and Indian Can Pack have revealed that their factory capacity has reached its maximum and they will not be able to increase supply for at least 6-12 months unless their production lines are increased or expanded in some way.
According to the Quality Control Order (QCO), the Indian government requires mandatory certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for all aluminum cans starting from April 1, 2025. Although this move aims to alleviate the short-term supply shortage in the Indian beer packaging industry, supply chain issues still exist.
Currently, due to the regulations of the Quality Control Order, the beer industry is unable to import aluminum cans from foreign suppliers, as certification from the Indian Bureau of Standards may take several months to complete. In order to avoid a shortage of aluminum can supply, local reports indicate that the Indian Brewers Association has lobbied the government to "temporarily relax" its regulation to ensure uninterrupted supply of aluminum cans from other countries.
In a letter to the Ministry of Industry and Domestic Trade Promotion, the Indian Brewers' Association requested a delay in the implementation of the Quality Control Order until April 1, 2026, to allow domestic aluminum can suppliers time to increase production capacity.
The Indian government has approved an extension of the implementation of the Quality Control Order until September 30th, but the Indian Brewers Association has stated that this period is not enough time for breweries to import aluminum cans into India.
In the United States, due to tariffs on aluminum, many craft brewers have been forced to reconsider how to package their beer, so brewers are prepared to cope with the rising cost of aluminum cans.
