Sales of non-alcoholic beer in UK supermarkets soar
2025-10-18
On October 15th, a report released by Nielsen IQ showed that British households are striving for healthier lifestyles, resulting in a decrease in sales of alcoholic beverages, but an increase in sales of low alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages.
During the four weeks ending October 4th, sales of eoe beer, wine, and spirits (BWS) were the weakest among all major categories in supermarkets.
Among them, sales decreased by 2.6% and sales decreased by 0.6%.
However, low alcohol and non-alcoholic beers are an exception. Nielsen IQ revealed that this sub category accounted for 3.9% of all beer sales, with a sales growth of 4.5% and a sales growth of 12.1% during the same period.
Mike Watkins, head of retail and business insights at Nielsen IQ, attributed the decrease in alcohol sales to broader health trends: "Three new trends may affect consumers' shopping choices for Christmas this year: moderate alcohol consumption, finding healthier foods, and cooking by hand
These trends are consistent with the survey results that supermarkets need to increase their selection of healthy foods. Similarly, ongoing research by Club Soda also indicates that an increasing number of British citizens are showing interest in low alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages.
Nielsen IQ pointed out in other parts of the report that Ocado (the leading online fresh food supermarket in the UK) remains the fastest-growing retailer in the UK, with Lidl and Marks&Spencer also showing strong growth momentum.
Sainsbury's and Tesco continue to maintain market share, mainly driven by membership card fees, while sales of Asda and Co op have declined.
