Thailand's new regulations on alcoholic beverages come into effect
2025-11-13
The new alcohol control regulations in Thailand have come into effect, tightening restrictions on the marketing and advertising of alcoholic beverages. Those who drink during the midday ban period will face high fines.
Thailand banned the sale of alcoholic beverages in most retail stores and supermarkets from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm as early as 1972. After the revised version of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Law came into effect on Saturday (November 8th), individuals who consume or are provided with alcoholic beverages during prohibited periods or locations will also face a fine of up to 10000 Thai baht (approximately 2199 RMB). In other words, the authorities used to only punish merchants, but now customers will also be punished.
Licensed entertainment venues, hotels, certified places in tourist areas, and airports providing international flights are exempt from the new regulations.
The Chairman of the Thai Catering Association, Chanong, is concerned that the new regulations will hinder the development of the catering industry, as customers are also being restricted. He gave an example that if a restaurant sells a bottle of easy open end beer to a customer at 1:59 pm, and the customer sits in the restaurant drinking until 2:05 pm, it violates the new regulations and the customer will face a fine.
Some people are also concerned that some officials may abuse stricter new regulations to impose fines on customers and restaurants, but in reality, they may be pocketing their own money.
Opposition People's Party MP Tao Pipi, who advocates relaxing the regulation of alcoholic beverages, believes that the ban period should be abolished, allowing alcoholic beverages to be sold throughout the day. He pointed out that the new regulations may confuse foreign tourists, who may order alcohol before 2 pm but only drink after 2 pm, unintentionally violating the rules.
The revised version of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Law also prohibits advertising for alcoholic beverages unless the advertising content is entirely based on facts. Using celebrities, internet celebrities, or public figures to promote alcoholic beverages is also illegal.
