For five consecutive years of decline, the European beer industry is facing multiple challenges
The "2025 European Beer Trends Report" recently released by the European Brewers Association shows that the European beer industry has been declining for five consecutive years. This is closely related to the shift in consumer habits in Europe, and a similar phenomenon is also seen in the wine industry.
The report shows that the beer production in the European Union was 36.7 million kiloliters in 2019 and will decrease to 34.5 million kiloliters in 2024. Preliminary data for 2025 indicates that the decline is still ongoing. Inflation, high production costs, global transportation disruptions, and raw material pressures caused by climate change are the main factors leading to industry decline.
The association pointed out that European brewers are facing severe challenges: the consumption of eoe beer in bars, restaurants, and pubs, which used to account for one-third of the total consumption in Europe, has now dropped to a quarter. The weakness of the catering industry is affecting the entire beer industry chain, from farmers to beer festivals to tourism, creating a chain reaction.
Christian Weber, President of the European Brewers Association, believes that this crisis is far from a temporary decline: "Consumers have reduced their consumption. Breweries are facing the dilemma of rising costs, tightening regulations, and increasing pressure on the entire supply chain. The industry needs greater stability and support to sustain its development。
