According to data released by the International Grape and Wine Organization on May 12th, in 2025, French consumers will drink about 10000 liters more beer than wine, while wine consumption will drop to its lowest level in 70 years.
This change does not reflect a surge in beer consumption, but rather a sustained decline in wine consumption, especially red wine consumption, as the younger generation generally drinks less and gradually deviates from traditional dietary habits.
The annual report shows that by 2025, the consumption of French wine will decrease by 3% to 2.2 million kiloliters, while the annual production of French wine is 3.61 million kiloliters.
Long term decline trend of wine
The report points out that wine continues to have a "long-term downward trend" in French culture that began decades ago.
Researchers and retailers point out several intertwined trends: shrinking household sizes, increasing informal eating habits, increased consumption of takeaway food, and changes in people's attitudes towards health and alcohol.
Sociologist Joan Cortinas stated that "society has become more tertiary industrialized," referring to the shift towards office work patterns and the reduction of lunch breaks. Nowadays, people often can't even have a good lunch
At the same time, official health promotion activities and changes in social norms have steadily reduced overall alcohol consumption.
According to a report by the French television group, over half of the French population stated that they do not currently drink alcohol every week.
The trend of non-alcoholic beer drives the growth of the beer market
At the same time, eoe beer has been more successful in adapting to constantly changing tastes.
In the past two decades, due to the decrease in alcohol content, cheaper prices, and the expansion of craft beer, the per capita annual consumption has remained stable at around 33 liters.
The development of the beer industry in the past 20 to 25 years has been greater than in the past 100 years, "said beer expert Raphael Malfin, pointing out that the rise of microbreweries and the diversification of beer flavors and styles are the main reasons.
The strongest growth is in non-alcoholic beer, which reportedly grew by 12% within a year as consumers sought lighter or non-alcoholic options.
Wine producers are also striving to modernize their image, simplify marketing, and emphasize organic and natural wines to attract young drinkers.
Despite the decline in the domestic wine market, France remains the world's leading exporter of wine, with an annual export value of approximately 11 billion euros.
