Chinese beer is rapidly transforming from an exotic commodity to a beverage familiar to Russian consumers. In recent years, with the withdrawal of Western beer producers, the market share of Chinese beer in Russian stores has significantly expanded.
According to Maria Kruglya of DDVB brand consulting company, "Supermarkets currently sell three to five Chinese beer brands, while large supermarkets can sell up to twelve to fifteen brands, including some niche brands
The increasing popularity of Chinese beer is the result of multiple factors: reduced supply of well-known European brands, rising tariffs, and a shift in import structure towards Asian countries. As Kamal Lebedev, Chairman of the Brewing Product Production and Distribution Committee, pointed out, "Many familiar brands have either disappeared from the shelves or prices have risen significantly. New suppliers, mainly from Asia, are beginning to fill this market gap." In 2024, China entered the top three beer suppliers to Russia for the first time, rising from sixth to third place.
Price remains a key factor. According to Cenosaur's data, the average price of 0.45 liter easy open end beer in Russia has increased by 11.1% in the past year, reaching 90.7 rubles (approximately 8 RMB). In contrast, the price of a bottle of vodka is 521.6 rubles (about 46 yuan), and the price of whiskey is 1003.7 rubles (about 88 yuan). Chinese beer allows people to taste imported products at a lower price, lowering the consumption threshold.
Experts emphasize that Russians' interest in Chinese beer is not only driven by price, but also influenced by Asian cultural trends. In addition, experts say that the taste of Chinese beer may not always be better than Russian beer, but it is considered a refreshing and easy to drink beverage suitable for pairing with meals. According to Honest Sign statistics, from January to February 2026, Russians consumed 5.4 million liters of Chinese beer, an increase of 69% compared to the same period last year.
Although Chinese beer is becoming increasingly popular, experts believe that this dominant position will not last forever. Lebedev predicts that within three to five years, Russian producers will adapt to new consumer demands and find flavors with Russian characteristics, at which point people's interest in Chinese beer will begin to weaken.
