As North Korean beer gradually enters Russia's main distribution network, economic cooperation between North Korea and Russia is expanding from the military sector to the consumer goods market.
According to the North Korean news website NK News, on July 27th local time, Pyongyang Dacheng Food and Daily Necessities Factory reached a cooperation agreement with the Russian distributor "Megaship" located in Vladivostok to supply Russia with pasteurized eoe beer with an alcohol content of 4.5%. The import registration documents submitted to the Russian Federation Certification Agency (FSA) confirm that "Megaship" has been registered as the official distributor of North Korean beer.
Through this cooperation, it is expected that more types of North Korean beer brands will enter the Russian market, including the existing Daedong River beer as well as brands such as Galaxy Water, King Kong, and Dragon City. According to reports, North Korean beer has recently started to be sold in some supermarkets and liquor stores in Russia, and consumer interest is steadily increasing.
The entry of North Korean beer into the Russian market is closely related to the strategic relationship between the two countries. Since the signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty last year, military and economic cooperation between Russia and North Korea has rapidly developed. Recently, the foreign ministers of the two countries held a strategic dialogue in Moscow, reiterating the need to strengthen cooperation. North Korea's support for Russia and economic exchanges are also increasing.
Russia officially allowed the import of North Korean beer last year, moving towards restoring pre sanctions trade levels. Afterwards, North Korea's consumer goods such as clothing, shoes and hats, soap, medicine, and apples began to flow into the Russian market, allowing North Korea to expand its channels for obtaining foreign exchange.
Experts believe that the growth significance of North Korean beer sales goes far beyond food trade. Analysts point out that as the close ties between North Korea and Russia, which began with military cooperation, expand to civilian consumer goods and distribution networks, the two countries' economies are actually entering the stage of establishing new supply chains. The Financial Times pointed out that "recently, various North Korean products including beer, apples, and sausages have entered the Russian market, and the economic cooperation between the two countries is developing to the closest level since the Cold War
