According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), on February 10, 2025, the US FDA issued a recall notice stating that Tri-Union Seafoods is recalling a batch of canned tuna because the product may be contaminated.
This voluntary recall is being carried out out of an abundance of caution, as a result of being notified by the supplier that there is a manufacturing defect in the easy-to-pull ring lid of some products that could compromise the integrity of the product seal, causing it to leak and, worse, possibly be contaminated with clostridium botulinum.
The recall involves some canned tuna from Genova, Van Camp's, HEB and Trader Joe's brands. Products are distributed to stores in 25 states. The recalled products include specific codes labeled on the bottom of cans, best by date and UPC numbers.
The FDA has warned consumers not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled. If consumers feel unwell, seek medical attention immediately. As of February 7, no illnesses associated with the recalled products have been reported.
The FDA is advising consumers who have purchased products affected by the recall not to consume them and to return them for a full refund.
