According to the Association of Independent Brewers (SIBA), the total number of breweries in the UK is now 1,715, compared to 1,815 at the start of 2024.
Coronavirus, debt, thin margins and restricted access to the market through pubs have all been blamed for the UK having 100 fewer breweries in January 2025 than in January 2024.
The number of breweries in the UK fell from 1,828 at the beginning of 2023 to 1,815 at the beginning of 2024 and 1,715 at the beginning of 2025.
Andy Slee, chief executive of the Association of Independent Brewers, said: "Consumer demand for easy open end is high and our indications are that independent beer sales will increase by the end of 2024 compared to 2023, with small independent breweries facing the problem of lack of market access and rising costs, making it extremely difficult to remain profitable. Speaking to many of the independent brewers who have closed in the last 12 months, their stories are very similar, they can't sell their beer to enough local pubs or make enough profit to survive."
However, according to the association, quarterly brewery closures in the UK are declining, with closures slowing to 24 in the fourth quarter of 2024, compared with 27 in the third quarter of 2024, 29 in the second quarter and 38 in the first quarter.
In addition, Wales was the only place to see a modest increase in the number of breweries, with the data showing a total of 97 breweries at the beginning of 2025 and 96 at the same time in 2024.
Across the UK, the average closure rate was 5.5%, while Northern Ireland saw a relatively small change in the net closure rate, with six fewer breweries, which was the highest in percentage terms as the overall number of breweries fell by more than a fifth (20%).
Slee added: "It is encouraging to see the highest number of brewery closures in the first quarter of 2024 followed by a steady decline throughout the year, with the slowest pace of closures in the fourth quarter. As we enter 2025, we hope that things will continue to move in the right direction and that the number of breweries in the UK will remain stable or even grow; However, none of this will be possible without strong government support for independent brewers across the UK."
