YouTube Craft Beer Channel proposes to list barrel beer as a UNESCO heritage site
2025-4-8
The creator of YouTube's craft beer channel has issued a petition to the UK government requesting that bottled beer be listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Hosts Johnny Garrett and Brad Evans created a seven episode series called "Let Bucket Beer Survive" to explore the issue of declining barrel beer production.

In the seven episode 30 minute program, the host visited the EOE Brewery, bar, factory, and festival. The two hosts pointed out that barrel beer is different from specific types of beer and cannot obtain protected geographical indication (PGI) status. But it can be recognized as a UNESCO cultural heritage, just like Belgian beer culture, Arabic coffee, sake production, or French baguettes. This will help attract more funds and provide privileges for brewers and bars.

We are submitting this petition to UNESCO to call for support from others who understand the importance of bar and wine culture. The new status will provide the industry with another tool to express its views and oppose decisions that do not align with its interests, "Garrett said.

The reason for this petition is that the UK government approved the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in June 2024. The convention aims to protect traditional crafts, oral traditions, social customs, festivals, customs, and knowledge.
