The shadow of tariffs casts a shadow over Mexican craft beer producers, causing them to lose 20% of their sales in four months
The Union of Independent Mexican Brewers (Uni ó n de Cerveceros Independientes) recently released a report stating that due to tariff uncertainty, Mexican brewers have lost 20% of their sales in the past four months.
On April 8th, Mexico's "Millennium Report" reported that US President Trump announced on April 4th that he would impose a 25% tariff on all imported beer, especially aluminum cans with easy lids. Mat í as Vera Cruz Duturnit, Chief Economist of the Mexican Federation of Independent Brewers, said, "This tariff targets beer and empty aluminum cans, including aluminum cans used to hold beer. If Mexico exports canned beer, it will actually be subject to a 25% tariff, at least as understood through existing statements
Vera Cruz Duterte expressed concern about this and hoped that they (the United States) would tell us that the document referred to something else. They not only listed empty cans, but also hinted that the target of taxation was canned beer. He pointed out that since Trump imposed tariffs during his first term, the US beer industry has been facing pressure from rising aluminum costs, so the industry is very concerned about protecting its position in the beer import market.
The general manager of a brewery in Mexico said that although all the beer produced in the factory is bottled, the uncertainty of tariffs has hindered his customers from placing orders. He explained that craft beer in the United States is already quite expensive, so the increase in product costs is not conducive to market promotion.
For many years, the beer trade between the United States and Mexico has been close. Official data shows that in 2024, the United States imported beer worth $7.5 billion, of which 84% came from Mexico.
