The Thai government has recently taken important measures to support the development of local small and medium-sized and community brewing industries. The Cabinet has approved in principle the revised draft of the alcohol production regulations submitted by the Ministry of Finance, with the core content allowing the sale of fresh lager EOE beer in barrels outside breweries.
Mr. Phophoom Rojansakul, Deputy Minister of Finance, announced this news on May 13th. He pointed out that this regulatory revision aims to reduce barriers and operational restrictions for new alcohol producers entering the market, especially for "community alcohol" operators. The government hopes to enhance the market competitiveness of community alcoholic beverages, drive local economic growth, promote domestic high-quality products, and utilize local wisdom to develop existing industries, thereby enhancing Thailand's cultural soft power.
The new regulations will significantly expand the sales channels for breweries, beer bars, and craft beer producers, allowing their bottled products to circulate nationwide. This will directly help small alcohol entrepreneurs create more revenue and encourage them to expand their business territory.
The revision of regulations also includes relaxing restrictions on the location of small and medium-sized factories. For example, for community breweries located far from water sources, the new regulations allow them to build within 100 meters of public water sources, but must be equipped with effective wastewater treatment systems to prevent environmental pollution. In addition, potential enterprises will be able to directly apply for the establishment of medium-sized industrial distilleries without the need to operate as small factories for one year, which will effectively enhance the competitiveness of small liquor entrepreneurs.
On the same day, Thai Prime Minister Patongtarn Shinawatra further confirmed after a cabinet meeting that the revision of this regulation aims to create a better business environment for small and medium-sized alcohol industry operators and promote the enhancement of Thailand's soft power by adjusting the rules and conditions related to alcohol production, such as license application standards, conditions for the establishment of medium-sized distilleries, and site regulations.
The tax bureau stated that it will continue to examine and address other related issues in the future to fully support the prosperity of the "community liquor" industry. This is seen as an important step by the Thai government to support local characteristic industries and stimulate economic vitality.
