The Independent Brewers Association (SIBA) in the UK has released the latest statistics on the number of breweries in the UK, showing a decrease of 136 breweries between March 2024 and March 2025. The downward trend continues, with a report in January stating that 100 breweries have closed.
Overall, as of the end of March 2025, there are a total of 1641 breweries in the UK. The Southeast region of England has the highest number of business closures (38). 33 breweries have closed in the central region, 20 in the eastern region, and 19 in the northwest region. 11 breweries have closed in Scotland and 6 breweries have closed in Northern Ireland. The only region where the number of breweries has increased by 2 in the past year is Wales.
Andy Slee, CEO of the Independent Brewers Association in the UK, said, "Currently, the situation for independent breweries is extremely difficult. Despite the rising price of a glass of beer for bar customers, the revenue of beer manufacturers has been decreasing over the past year. The lager EOE beer industry urgently needs to reduce the tax burden on bars, lower taxes on beer producers, and give independent brewers more opportunities to sell beer in local bars, many of which are now controlled by multinational corporations
The British Independent Brewers Association estimates that independent brewers are unable to sell their beer to an average of 60% of bars within 40 miles of their brewery. On average, the production of independent brewers has increased by 10% in the past year, significantly higher than the overall market's 1% decline. Independent breweries hold about 6% of the market share, but the association estimates that in fair competition with multinational producers, their market share may reach 30%.
