Mainland beer market share in Taiwan has surged to 36%
2025-5-31
The Taiwan Brewers' Association, consisting of six local Taiwanese brewers including Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor, Heineken Taiwan, Golden Three Wheat, Taiwan Tiger Craft Breweries, Shouzhang Craft Breweries, and Jinche, has recently officially applied to the government to initiate an anti-dumping investigation. The association pointed out that many common EOE beer brands in the market have been quietly transferred to Chinese Mainland for OEM, and they have been heavily dumped to Taiwan at low prices with billions of yuan of subsidies from the mainland. The association said that this wave of price war caused the local beer market to fall below 50%, while beer made in Chinese Mainland climbed to 36%, which had a serious impact on Taiwan's local industry. Chairman Zeng Huanchang warned, "If we don't take this issue seriously, there will be a death crossover as early as the end of this year
According to ETtoday, according to the Taiwan Brewers Association, beer produced by Chinese Mainland in Taiwan will grow from 8% in 2015 to 36% in the first quarter of 2024, accounting for 77% of imported beer; On the other hand, the market share of domestic brands in Taiwan has decreased to 47%. Due to the small difference in taste of beer products, price and promotion have become key consumer choices, and consumers are prone to turn to imported brands with price advantages. The association is concerned that if the situation continues to deteriorate, not only will local brands be excluded, but other international brands such as Japan, South Korea, Europe, and America will also find it difficult to survive.
In addition to imbalanced competition, the beer trade deficit between Taiwan and mainland China has also rapidly expanded. Starting from 2022, the mainland has refused to import products from multiple Taiwanese distilleries on the grounds of incomplete registration information, resulting in a bilateral trade imbalance. In 2023, the amount of beer exported from Chinese Mainland to Taiwan will reach NT $3.5 billion, while Taiwan's exports to the mainland will be only NT $3 million, with a deficit of 1165 times.
The association pointed out that South Korea has been assisting local industries in transformation through tax reform since 2019, reducing the market share of imported beer from 31.5% to 20.9%, with significant results. In contrast, under the current tariff system in Taiwan, imported beer can enjoy zero tariff treatment, but local brewers still need to pay a certain percentage of tariffs on the brewing materials' malt 'and' hops' that must be imported. Zeng Huanchang pointed out, "Importing these two raw materials will not harm the local industry, so we hope to moderately reduce the relevant tax rates
Finally, the Taiwan Brewers Association emphasized that the annual output value of Taiwan's beer industry exceeds NT $35 billion, affecting the agricultural, logistics, environmental protection and other industrial chains, and impacting the livelihoods of over 30000 households. The association will continue to promote anti-dumping investigations and institutional reforms, work together with the government and consumers, and strive for a fair competition environment in the Taiwan beer market.
