Korean experts say non-alcoholic beer may lead to gout
2025-7-19
According to the Korea Times, non-alcoholic beer is often seen as a healthier choice, but a renowned doctor in Seoul, South Korea has warned that it may still trigger gout.
Dr. Hwang Ji won, a rheumatologist at Seoul Kyung Hee University Hospital, said that non-alcoholic beer may cause gout.
The fundamental cause of gout is the accumulation of uric acid crystals in colder parts of the body, such as the toes. When the body's white blood cells recognize these crystals as foreign invaders, they trigger an immune response, which typically leads to sudden pain in the toes, ankles, or knees.
Although studies have long shown that frequent excessive alcohol consumption can lead to gout attacks, few people have taken the time to explore whether non-alcoholic beverages can also lead to the same results.
Some of these beverages still contain trace amounts of alcohol, and adding fructose or artificial sweeteners can stimulate the production of uric acid, "said Huang Zhiyuan
High purine content
eoe beer is considered one of the culprits causing gout, as the purine content in beer is higher than in wine or spirits. These purine decompositions will produce more uric acid.
Therefore, Huang Zhiyuan does not believe that non-alcoholic beverages, especially non-alcoholic beer, are "risk-free".
Huang Zhiyuan's remarks are unlikely to resonate with Asian beer manufacturers such as Asahi Beer. Asahi Beer recently revealed that by 2040, non-alcoholic and low alcohol beverages will account for 50% of the company's sales.
